We are at the threshold of a revolution in astronomy and astrophysics as ground-breaking as when the telescope was first used to look at the night sky in 1609.

A series of giant telescopes both on the ground and in space are due to come on stream in the early 2020s. It is certain

that these instruments will revolutionise our understanding of the cosmos around us, but what might these new eyes on the Universe reveal?
