The 'Space Race' began on October 4th, 1957, when the Soviet Union beat the United States and launched the world's first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, into orbit around the Earth.

The Soviet Union also beat the United States by launching the first man in to Earth orbit with Yuri Gagarin on April 12th, 1961. The also launched the first woman into space, Valentina Tereshkova, on 16th June, 1963.

The 'Race' effectively ended on July 20th, 1969, with the United States landing the first humans on the Moon with Apollo 11.

Join us at the Planetarium to revisit the technology, challenges and successes of these momentous times in space exploration history.
